Dr. Vitense has done invisible fillings for over 20 years.
He was one of the first dentists in the country to hear Dr. John Kanka describe a way to bond composite to teeth and create a restoration that blends in so well as to almost disappear.
He does not place amalgam, the black-colored metallic filling that contains up to 50% mercury. Dr. Vitense does not believe that a federally regulated hazardous waste material should be placed in the human body. Instead he places and bonds in a composite material that not only blends in beautifully but stands up to the rigors of constant chewing forces.
Dr. Vitense uses a “raincoat” for teeth.
At least, this is what we call it for our little patients that we treat. He uses a non-latex sheet called a rubber dam which covers the mouth and isolates the teeth being worked on. This barrier allows him to remove old fillings and decay without the patient ingesting any of these materials or excess water. This also assures no bacteria can be trapped inside the filling which could create a mild to severe sensitivity. For his patients that feel claustrophic or "can't get enough air," a small section can be cut away to allow air to come in through the mouth. The patient is comfortable and the final restoration looks and feels like a beautiful, natural tooth!
A crown prepared by Dr. Vitense looks so beautiful and natural that the casual observer cannot tell.
If you have an older crown in your mouth you may have been asked,
“What’s that black stuff up by your gums?” Dr. Vitense gets that question all the time by his patients that have old crowns in their mouth.
The answer is metal. The crown or “cap” that they have has a metal understructure with porcelain fused to it. Because the metal is silver or gold in color, it must be covered by an opaque material that masks it. Because of this, the crown does not transmit light like a natural tooth, and you get a dark black line above the crown.
Dr. Vitense prepares all- porcelain and all-ceramic crowns and veneers that look absolutely amazing!
